West Rand, Gauteng

The West Rand of Gauteng borders on the North-West Province and stretches north-north-west from Johannesburg’s Northern Suburbs (Sandton and Randburg) to the ancient Magaliesberg foothills, and west from Soweto and Roodepoort to the mining town of Carletonville. The main town in this area is Krugersdorp, and much of the region between JHB and Krugersdorp consists of farms, grazing land, small nature reserves and country developments.

The beautiful and popular Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens are situated just north of Roodeport, but the main attractions of the area lie to the north past Krugersdorp. Here you will find the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, encompassing the Sterkfontein Caves, the Wonder Cave, the Maropeng Museum and the Rhino and Lion Reserve.

Just North of the Cradle is the start of the beautiful Magaliesberg area that straddles the border with the North West Province and offers a variety number of outdoor activities.
