Tshwane (Pretoria), Gauteng
The city of Pretoria is the Administrative Capital of South Africa. Although it has officially been renamed Tshwane, the city is still commonly known as Pretoria. It is home to over a million people, many government employees and their families, but also many commuters who prefer the slower pace of life in Joburg’s sister city.
Pretoria is also known as the City of Jacarandas. The suburban streets are lined with these purple flowering trees, and in spring and summer, the central cityscape is surrounded by a sea of violet. The other notable feature is the incredible architecture found all over the city in-between some rather drab 60’s and 70’s buildings.
Pretoria still retains much of its ‘Afrikaans’ flavor, and is generally considered to be a bit more laid back than Jozi. There are several historical monuments and heritage buildings, the most impressive the being the Union Buildings, designed by famed architect Herbert Baker, the seat of government, and Pretoria’s most famous landmark. If you do one thing in Pretoria, visit the Union Buildings – an attraction that is visually impressive not just for its size and architecture, but also for its beautiful terraced gardens. Built in 1913, the Union Buildings are commonly thought to be Herbert Baker’s greatest achievement.
If South African history appeals, there are several museums worth a visit, including the natural history Transvaal Museum, the Smuts Museum just outside of Pretoria, the Cultural History Museum, The Pioneer Museum and Melrose House.
Other attractions in the city include the Pretoria Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. There are several nature reserves in the area, and there are many outdoor attractions at the Hartbeespoort Dam and in the nearby Magaliesberg.
The city of Pretoria isn’t all about history, monuments and museums, however – the city also has a thriving café society and nightlife, and after a night out clubbing, the beautiful Irene Dairy Farm just outside serves amazing buffet brunches – so join a few hundred locals on a Sunday and eat your heart out.
