The Magaliesberg

Just north of JHB is the start of the Magaliesberg  – a beautiful mountainous area that stretches from the small town of Magaliesburg north to Rustenburg in the North West Province, with the main line of mountains and protected ‘Magalies’ area just over the provincial ‘border’ and running west from the Hartbeespoort Dam.

Though most of what is offered in the Magaliesberg (‘berg’ meaning ‘mountain’) falls under North-West Attractions, it can get confusing because of the town of Magaliesburg (‘burg’ meaning town), which is in Gauteng. So you might book abseiling in the Magaliesberg and a guest-house in Magaliesburg and find yourself in two different places…

The Magaliesberg offers beautiful scenery and a number of outdoor activities, from the many watersports and other attractions at Hartbeespoort, to outdoor adventure activities such as abseiling at the private Magaliesberg Mountain Sanctuary.

The Magaliesberg range is the oldest mountain range on earth. The two million year old range, eroded over time into characteristic ’round’ mountains, featuring rivers, waterfalls and strange rock formations is geologically unique and the Range and surrounding foothills are the perfect environment for weekend adventures in nature – from, hiking, rock-climbing, canyoning, abseiling, horse-riding, hot-air ballooning and mountain-biking to 4X4.

Also see Showme Rustenburg to find out about the many activities that can be enjoyed in the northern Magaliesberg.
