The Cradle Nature Reserve, West Rand, Gauteng
Within the Cradle of Mankind World Heritage Site is the Cradle Nature Reserve, a 3 000 hectare getaway from the city rush and ideal for a weekend wildlife experience. The reserve offers wildlife walks and drives and paleontological tours and is a good base from which to explore the area.
Accommodation is at the exclusive Cradle Forest Camp, a fully-serviced, self-catering camp of eight thatched chalet units, on the banks of the Motsetse stream. There’s also the option of overnighting at Katrina’s House, set on a rise outside the forest, offering lovely views over the reserve.
If you just feel like chilling on the cooking front, the Cradle Restaurant offers international cuisine, a cocktail bar, a log fire in winter and one of the best restaurant views in the country.
The reserve has more than 35 species of mammal including giraffe and rhinoceros. Game drives are available on request. The stream is regularly stocked with trout and presents challenging brook fishing to the experienced fly-fisherman.
If you feel energetic, take the two-hour walk where besides spotting the giraffe browsing the acacias and zebras, eland and red hartebeest on the grasslands, you could tick off any of the 210 bird species found in the park.
The reserve has all the facilities to host smaller weddings that will make any bride proud.
