Noupoort

Noupoort is a small ‘railway’ town best known for a famous drug rehab. It’s location on the N9 between Hanover and the Eastern Cape border, nestled in the foothills of the Compassberg mountains and so en-route from the Upper Karoo to the Karoo Heartland – where you will find the charming village of Nieu Bethesda and further into the mountains the Camdeboo National Park near Graaf Reinet, among other attractions.

The Karoo area around Noupoort is less flat than further north, and despite the overriding heat and aridity, features ‘at times misty’ valleys at the start of the Compassberg range – in the area between the Upper Karoo and the Eastern Cape Karoo Heartland that is called the ‘Transkaroo’. This more topographically varied terrain lends itself to hiking and off-road trails – offered by Transkaroo Adventures, situated just outside of Noupoort.
