Colesburg

The small rural town of Colesburg is possibly best known as ‘the place you stop and rest’ while on the road, as it sits on the N1 almost exactly half way between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Colseburg is a particularly pretty town, with many well preserved Victorian buildings, the whole of it dominated by a flat-topped hill known as Coleskop.

The Colesberg-Kemper Museum is a fine example of 19th century Karoo architecture and houses fascinating relics of the town’s history. See the area’s cultural history, a collection of fossils dating back to the first reptiles to live in this area and a permanent photographic display, compiled by UNISA, on the Karoo Nomads known as the donkey ‘karretjie’ people.

Colesburg is also known for its thoroughbred horse-breeding and merino sheep farming. Other attractions include the Doornkloof and Rolfontein Nature Reserves, around the Vanderkloofdam, the Karoo Gariep Conservancy between Colesburg and Hanover, and the Gariep Dam just over the Free State border.
