Kathu

Kathu, one of the fastest growing towns in the Northern Cape, is actually in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, and is home to one of the biggest open cast iron ore mines in the world. The size of the equipment used for open cast mining is mind blowing, and is certainly worth a look.

But this is not the only surprise this rather remote town has in store. South of town is an incredible forest of camel thorn trees, Acacia Erioloba, one of only two in the world – the other lies between Mariental and Reboboth in Namibia. Imagine 4000 hectares of trees erupting from the barren red sands to form a reserve now registered as a Natural Heritage Site.

And to top it all, the beautiful Kathu Golf Course lies partly in this forest. Rated as one of the top 20 golf courses in the country, the 18-hole course hosts the annual Kalahari Classic and the 2nd stop on the winter leg of the Vodacom Southern African Tour.

Kathu lies strategically alongside the N14 between Kuruman and Upington, and three hours’ away from Kimberley, to which it is connected by road, rail and air.
