Stilfontein, Southern District, North West Province

Stilfontein, North West Province, South Africa

Stilfontein is a mostly residential community very close Klerksdorpin the North West Province, built on the back of the three gold mines that operated in the area, though two are now closed. The town’s name means ‘Still Fountain’, which is somewhat ironic considering that Stilfontein experiences regular earth tremors, and also that one of the reasons for the mine closures was an earthquake in March 2005 that damaged the mine shafts and also some buildings in the town.

In contrast to its low cost residential and mining town profile, Stilfontein is famous for it roses, and the community is worth a visit in spring when the roses bloom and transform the gardens and parks in Stilfontein.

Getting there: Stilfontein is 14km west of Klerksdorp on the N12.
