Southern District

The Southern District of the North West Province runs along the border with the Northern Free State to the south along the line of the Vaal River, bordering the Vaal Triangle area to the south-east and Gauteng to the east.

The ‘Capital’ of the region is Klerksdorp, but the majority of ‘outdoor activities’ tourist attractions will be found in the vicinity of the University City of Potchefstroom near the Vaal River, the Vaal Triangle and the Vredefort Dome WHS in the Northern Free State, where activities range from camping and fishing to abseiling and white-water rafting.

Other attractions include the Wolwespruit Nature Reserve and the Boskop Dam Nature Reserve. While the North West’s Big 5 game parks are to be found further north toward Botswana, a safari experience on a small scale combined with family activities can be found at the Buffelsvlei Animal Park. The remainder of the Southern District consists of farms and cattle ranches.
