Sabie, Panorama Route, Mpumalanga

Sabie is a small town nestled in a particularly beautiful valley on the edge of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg escarpment, in a forestry area of outstanding scenic and natural heritage value. The Sabie area is famous for its waterfalls, mountain streams and the elusive but occasionaly spotted black leopards (or ‘black panthers’) that roam the Sabie Valley and the Long Tom Pass area between Sabie and Lydenberg.

Although much of the Sabie River Valley is private plantation with restricted access, there are 20 declared Natural Heritage sites in the vicinity. Many outdoor activities are on offer in the area around Sabie – from hikes and walks to MTB trails, white-water rafting, fly-fishing, horse trails, rock climbing and abseiling, birding and 4×4 trails. In addition, Sabie is only an hours drive from the Kruger National Park, and en-route to the Kruger Park from Gauteng. Sabie is definitely worth a stop for a few days even if all you are after is sightseeing – the waterfalls in the area are magnificent, particularly in summer when rainfall is high.

Getting there: Take the N12 east from Johannesburg and stay on it as it merges on to the N4 to Sabie. Take the R359 north just after Kaapsehoop, then after 20km take the R37 at the signpost for Sabie. Total travelling time is 4 hours 30 mins.

A particularly scenic route is via Lydenberg on the R36, which will take you down the magnificent Long Tom Pass.
