Panorama Route, Mpumalanga Escarpment
As the name suggests, the Panorama Route is rich in panoramic views, but it is also rich in South African history. This region of Mpumalanga runs along the north-eastern Drakensberg escarpment from the town of Sabie east to Hazyview near the border with the Kruger National Park, and north from Sabie to Graskop and the Blyde River Canyon. The area also includes Orighstad and the famous historical town of Pilgrim’s Rest.
The Panorama Route includes some of Mpumalanga’s best known and most spectacular attractions, such as the Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window. Besides these magnificent geological attractions, the Panorama Route offers a great variety of outdoors and adventure activities. The forested Sabie River Valley at the start of the Panorama Route is known for its activities offerings, from hot air ballooning to white water rafting. Other popular activities are walking and hiking trails, horse riding, mountain-biking and swimming in the pools made by some of the beautiful Panorama Route Waterfalls around Sabie and Graskop.
If you travelling to the Kruger National Park, do yourself a huge favour and make sure you have a few extra days spared to enjoy this breathtakingly beautiful part of South Africa.
