Komatipoort, Lowveld, Mpumalanga

Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Komatipoort, or Komatiepoort as it is also spelled, is a lush sub-tropical border post town situated at the juncture between the Komati and Crocodile Rivers, 3km from the Lebombo Border Post between South Africa and Mozambique.

Known as one of the hottest places in South Africa, with temperatures often over 40 c in summer, and very mild winters, Komatipoort is a hop and a skip from the unspoiled coastline, and is surrounded by tropical fruit orchards and estates, farmland, private game reserves and lodge accommodations.

Komatipoort is essentially a trade post, but is also a popular tourist stop due to its proximity to the Mozambique border and the Kruger National Park at the Crocodile River Bridge Gate, and while the main attraction at Komatipoort is no doubt the Kruger National Park, don’t forget the wonders, flavours and often prawn-based culinary delights offered by neighbouring Mozambique, not to mention the crystal clear ocean offering superb fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving.

Komatipoort is also only 65 km from the Swaziland border, on the ‘Wild Frontier’ area of the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The area immediately around Komatipoort also offers a number of wildlife and other attractions, including tigerfish fishing in the Komati River, tigerfish and bass fishing in the nearby dams and private game parks as well as various other outdoors activities.

Getting there: Komatipoort lies on the N4 just over and hour’s drive from Nelspruit.
