Kaapmuiden, Lowveld, Mpumalanga
Kaapmuiden is a tiny settlement situated on the banks of the Crocodile River near the Kruger National Park in the Lowveld Region of Mpumalanga.
Though the town itself is tiny, with dirt roads, the surrounding area is magnificently huge! Kaapmuiden is only 25km from Kruger in a lush, mountaineous area that is filled with widlife. Most of this landscape around Kaapmuiden is taken up with private reserves, game lodges, mountain retreats and fruit farms – about 20 of them altogether. These individual properties came together to create a 20 000ha mountain nature reserve in the 1990’s, and the result is that today, wherever you decide to stay in the area just south-west of Kaapmuiden, you are surrounded by hills covered in bushveld, and forested ravines thick with wildlife and birdlife, including Nyala, Kudu, Buafflo, Rhino, baboons, monkeys and raptors such as the Black Eagle and Fish Eagle.
An interesting feature of Kaapmuiden that you should look out for on the R38 kilometres from Kaapmuiden toward Barberton, is the ‘modern rock art’ of artist Nukain Nabusa.
Nukain Nabusa lived and worked in Barberton, but created his ‘Stone Garden’ on the roadside near Kaapmuiden in the 1980’s in an ideal hillside ‘natural setting’.
Nukain has since passed on, and the Stone Garden has been restored as a tribute to the artist.
Getting there: Take the N4 east from Nelspruit toward Komatipoort. Kaapmuiden is only a half hour drive from Nelspruit.
