Bethal, Highveld & Cosmos Region, Mpumalanga

Bethal, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Bethal is a small town in a maize farming area of the Mpumalanga Cosmos Region, surrounded by power stations. There are no particularly notable tourist attractions in Bethal and no game farms in the surrounding area, but there several quaint guesthouses and luxury establishments have survived for years on the back of business travel and Bethal’s location on the N17 only two hours from Oliver Tambo airport, makes it perfectly positioned to offer lodge accommodations for travellers to other areas of Mpumalanga and Swaziland.

Bethal was once one of South Africa’s main potato producing areas, but a combination of severe labour strife and racial issues dating back to the 1950s, and the mushrooming of power plants all around Bethel eventually saw the end of that industry. Maize farming has done better, and, power stations aside, come Autumn, the pretty pink and white Highveld cosmos flowers never fail to bloom along the sides of the road and around abandoned farm buildings that hark back to the Potato Heydeys.

Getting there: Bethal is just under 2 hours drive from Johannesburg on the N17.
