Lydenburg

Lydenburg is a richly historical town situated in the foothills of the Steenkampsberg and Mauschberg mountains in Mpumalanga – an area with superior scenic beauty.

Lydenburg was once one of the central ‘Voortrekker’ towns and the location for much of the famous ‘Jock of the Bushveld’ tales, and today serves as one of the gateway towns for travellers heading into the Mpumalanga Lowveld and the Panorama Route featuring the breathtakingly beautiful Blyde River Canyon.

Lydenburg is also a famed trout / fly-fishing ‘centre’ and sits at the foot of the historical and scenically spectacular Long Tom Pass. Other attractions in the area include the Sterkspruit Nature Reserve, Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve and 244m Lydenburg Falls. Three separate waterfalls in the same location make the Lydenburg Falls one of the most spectacular in Mpumalanga.

The scenic beauty of the area attracts the creative and an annual art exhibition in the Civic Centre in Lydenburg displays art works from local painters, carvers, stained-glass artists and other artists and crafters and attracts tourists from all over the world.

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the area around Lydenburg is on horse-back.

Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N4 going East into Mpumalanga. At Belfast, take the R540 turn off and continue to the T-junction at Lydenburg. Here, take the R36.
