Hoedspruit, Valley of the Olifants, Limpopo
Hoedspruit is the centre of Safari Country!
Hoedspruit is one of the best game viewing and eco-tourism destinations in South Africa. Situated in the Limpopo Province at the foot of the Limpopo Drakensberg mountains, between the Kruger National Park and the magnificent Blyde River Canyon, this small increasingly tourist town is a base for many ‘wild’ and ‘wildlife’ adventures and experiences.
The town itself is rural and somewhat functional in character, and surrounded by many excellent game parks and conservation areas. You won’t be travelling here for the nightlife – but to go ‘bush’ n Big 5 country, and enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife that Southern Africa has to offer. Going bush can be done in luxury style at private reserves such as the Kapama Private Game Reserve, but there are many group and family style wildlife experiences in and around Hoedspruit, including a number of animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation Centres where you get up very close to often elusive or nocturnal species, and wildlife estates.
However, it’s not all about elephants, lions, safaris and adventures: Hoedspruit features a well-known silk factory where you can buy superb quality spun silk products.
Getting there: From JHB, take the N1 north towards Pretoria, turning on to the N4 east to eMalahleni and Belfast. Turn off the N4 in Belfast which is 240km from Pretoria. Turn right at Belfast Toyota onto R540. Travel to a T-junction, turning left there for Mashisheng. In Mashisheng turn left at the Ohgrigstad sign onto the R36. After 102 km turn on to the R527, turning right onto the R40 after R32km. Follow the signs to Hoedspruit. The total travelling time from Johannesburg is about 5 – 6 hours. Eastgate Airport is an alternative, but then you will miss out on the stunning scenery on way!
