Park Rynie

Park Rynie is a small tranquil and unique holiday town situated just south of Scottburgh along the Umdoni Coast, KwaZulu-Natal. Park Rynie is a caravanner’s delight, with accommodation available right on the beach.

Park Rynie beach lies south of the town centre, at Rocky Bay, where you can still see the remains of the whaling station that was built before World War I as well as the remains of a whaling wreck that ran aground in 1920.

Rocky Bay, an unspoilt splendour, has a beautiful swimming beach with shark nets for safe swimming and lifeguards (in season), as well as an exceptional tidal pool. Walking from the south point, you will discover the most stunning coast, where you will be able to swim between interesting rock pools. Anglers can enjoy fishing from the rocks. Horse riding along the beach is allowed.

This sheltered beach is home to the Ski-Boat Club. The breakwater that was built by the whaling company, is known as Rocky Bay Pier and the landing ramp is still in use today by fishing craft and leisure seekers.

As is the case with most of this magnificent coastline with its warm waters, this area has excellent deep-sea scuba-diving at Cowrie Reef, sporting spectacular plant life, mysterious caves, gullies and swim-throughs. Marine life varies from small reef fish right through to the game fish, dolphins and Zambezi sharks. Cowrie Reef is only a 4.5km boat ride from the launching site and 2 km from the beach. Visibility is excellent and diving depth ranges from 16 to 26m.

Close by is Scottburgh, a beautiful bay with kilometres of unspoilt coastline, and the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve is located about 25 km inland off the R612.

Other neighbouring towns include Pennington and Umzinto.

Getting there: Park Rynie is a small village at the junction of the N2 highway and the R612 to Ixopo.
