Mpophomeni, Natal Midlands, KwaZulu Natal

The town of Mpophomeni in the Natal Midlands is a lesser known landmark of South African history. The town was first established in the 70’s as a segregation settlement and was an area of immense sadness for some time. There was very little to be said about the happiness of the people who inhabited this town for it was a place of separation and suppression.

However, today, the town is abuzz with life and smiles and community hospitality. The greatest prize of the town being their famous “Zulu Township Tours” experience. Visitors can be enthralled by the traditionalism and vibrancy of the town and its richly diverse inhabitants. A visit to the Wall of Reconciliation, that commemorates the lives lost by those who fought for a better life, and the newly established Mpophomeni Eco-Museum, are sure to bring out the historian in any visitor.
