Port Shepstone, Hibiscus Coast, KwaZulu-Natal
Port Shepstone is the largest town and the commercial and industrial centre of the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. It is also the capital of the Hibiscus Coast which stretches from Hibberdene in the north to Port Edward in the south. It is about 120 km from Durban and is located on the Mzimkulu River, one of the biggest in the province.
The town is also one of the most popular holiday destinations in KwaZulu-Natal with its pristine sandy beaches and a host of activities in and around the town from diving, surfing and fishing in the warm waters to hikes, camping and bird watching in the nearby nature reserves.
For nature lovers the well known Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is a mere 20 km from the town where you will find a number of hiking trails to enjoy the spectacular landscape. Take a leisurely boat trip up the river and enjoy the abundant wildlife along the banks. For the more active there’s river rafting, canoeing and skiing and mountain biking.
The 18 km of coastline offers great opportunities for fishing, surfing, scuba-diving, jet-skiing and boating. The designated bathing areas are safe and the water is warm.
Port Shepstone has a rich history which can be experienced at the maritime themed museum. The cast-iron lighthouse dates back to 1906 and its 27000 candlepower is still warning ships of the dangers. The lighthouse is well worth a visit.
