Port Edward

Port Edward is a coastal holiday destination on the southern border of the Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. It is a quiet place of relaxation, and seldom experiences a holiday rush. Historically, it was the last place in KwaZulu-Natal to be declared a village, which should give visitors and indication as to the slow pace of development here, and the tranquility and remoteness that it has maintained.

This makes the beaches here, such as Silver Beach and Glenmore Beach, great places to take in the splendour of this magnificent coastline while lazing the day away with little disturbance from other holiday makers!

The Indian Ocean is a wonderful playground for ocean lovers, and the scuba diving and fishing opportunities at Port Edward will please these types of visitors. The shipwreck three-hundred metres from shore, known as the San Joao (St John) shipwreck, is one of the first ships to have wrecked on the KwaZulu-Natal coast in 1552. The wreck is a famed dive spot here and is a must-dive for scuba lovers.

For fishing enthusiasts, the annual sardine run in the months of June/July is a spectacle not to be missed. This a great time to fish for game fish and sharks, as they are out in their numbers and close to shore, feeding off the millions of migratory sardines. For those not involved in the fishing, it is still a spectacle as the ocean becomes a boiling pot of sea and bird life.

For nature lovers, the forested ravines around Port Edward are home to a staggering array of bird and animal life, and the sights and sounds of the forest are best enjoyed on a relaxed and refreshing forest hike.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N2 going south to Port Shepstone. Here, take the R61 coastal road going through Margate, and continue to Port Edward.
