Margate

Margate is probably the most popular holiday resort on the Hibiscus Coast, part of the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Most of the development in Margate is centred around holiday accommodation and tourism establishments and therefore thrives during the holiday seasons. The intensive tourist related development of the area has not detracted from Margate’s natural beauty

Apart from the magnificent beaches, the main one being a Blue Flag Beach, Margate is well known for snorkeling and scuba-diving on the Protea Banks – one of the best dive sites on the coast. There are a number of other very interesting dive sites including Adda Reef, Potato Reef, Deep Salmon and Bo Boyi where you can explore coral reefs and deep caves. The warm Indian Ocean and the coral reefs attract an abundance of sea life including game fish and sharks.

Although most activities centre around the beaches and the surf, the town has great shopping, restaurants, art galleries and craft shops. Enjoy a round of golf on the very attractive Margate Country Club golf course or visit the Margate Bird Park for a family outing.

Because of its central location about 20 km from Port Shepstone and 30 km from Port Edward numerous attractions are within easy driving distance. Hiking, canoeing, bird watching, abseiling, fishing , boating, river rafting, surfing, jet-skiing, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling and diving are all possible without having to travel very far. There are also a number of excellent golf courses at Southbroom, Ramsgate and Sam Lameer, all within a 30 minute drive.

Margate is approximately 100km south of Durban on the N2.
