Mkuze

Mkuze (also spelt Mkhuze) is a small town on the Elephant Coast just north of Zululand and right next to the uMkhuze Game Reserve (part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (Greater St Lucia Wetland Park). It is about 350km from Durban and 50km from the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve.

It is overlooked by Ghost Mountain which is said to have been the site of many bloody battles and consequently haunted by ghosts from the past. The Ubombo Mountain Nature Reserve, bordered by the Mkuze River, is just to the north of the town.

Apart from the proximity to protected areas and game reserves, Mkuze is a thriving farming area focusing mainly on sugar cane, timber plantations and cattle farming. It is also on the main railway line from Swaziland to Durban. It has a population of around 50,000.
