Winterton

Winterton is a small village in the central Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It serves as the gateway to the central and northern area of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park and some of the most imposing peaks of the Drakensberg Mountain Range – including Champagne Castle, Cathedral Peak (the second highest in South Africa) and Cathkin Peak.

Its proximity to the Drakensberg wonderland of spectacular landscapes, mountain climbing, hiking, trout fishing, holiday resorts and camping, make Winterton a very popular stay-over for visitors in transit.

However, it also has a life of its own – an annual street carnival in July when local artists and all businesses involved in the tourism industry take over the main street, a number of museums and monuments, a gallery of San paintings and the world famous Drakensberg Boys Choir about 30km outside the town.

Getting there: the town is about midway between Johannesburg and Durban on the N3. From Durban turn right onto the R600 and then left for a short distance on the R74. From Johannesburg, turn left onto the R74 and proceed for about 20km.
