Giants Castle

Giant’s Castle Game Reserve lies in the central region of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a world heritage site, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The outline of the peaks on the escarpment resemble the shape of a sleeping giant – hence the name.

The reserve is home to some of the best examples of rock art by the San people who used to roam the area many thousands of years ago. The area is an eco-tourism paradise and is an ideal launch area for hikes into the Drakensberg. The Giant’s Castle Camp camp nestles in the folds of the valleys on the way down from the grassy terrain above. The views from the camp are truly spectacular.

There are numerous hiking trails in the reserve – from 3km to 25km – 285km in all. The Bushman’s River Trail is a popular hike and there are a number of points of interest on the way – look out for the Sandstone View, Rock 75, and Main Caves Bushman Museum. The Lammergeyer Hide is open to visitors who can see endangered bird species including the bearded vulture.

Getting there: From the north turn off the N3 at the Giant’s Castle/Wembezi interchange. Follow the signs for about 60km from the interchange.
