Umhlali, Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

Umhlali, Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

Umhlali is a quaint village, situated a few kilometers inland form the Dolphin Coast resort towns of Salt Rock and Sheffield Beach on the banks of the river of the same name. The village has a decidedly sugar theme because of its location in a major sugar cane farming area. In fact, there are plans afoot to establish a Sugar Museum in the village where visitors will be able to see how sugar cane is crushed. The name means “place of waiting” in Zulu because the locals used to gather on the banks of the river to wait before crossing

The Umhlali Golf and Country Club is actually about 6 km outside of the village in the direction of Ballito. The course is truly magnificent and is ranked in the Top Hundred courses in South Africa and is the 28th most popular course in the entire country and 3rd in KZN.

The sugar mill near the village offers tours where visitors can experience first-hand how sugar cane is processed.
