Tugela Mouth

Thukela Mouth is a small village and resort at the mouth of the Thukela (Tugela) River on about 100 km from Durban on the North Coast, KwaZulu-Natal. The river is the largest in the province and the area is best known for its excellent fishing spots.

At the mouth there are two resorts, one on either side of the mouth. On the south side there is a nature reserve and on the north side a caravan park and some holiday chalets. The drive from the north side to the south is about 20 km because it is not possible to cross the river.

The solitude and the lush vegetation together with the great fishing opportunities make this a very attractive place for nature lovers and avid fishermen. The annual Thukela Raft Race is held on the mouth and a number of fishing tournaments are held. It is also a wonderland of walks and endless beaches where whales and dolphins can be seen almost year-round

The small town of Thukela, on the northern bank of the river, is close by and bait and basic tackle is available. The roads are in excellent condition so there is no problem with access to either side of the mouth. The village is about 4 km off the N2.
