Krugersdorp Game Reserve, West Rand, Gauteng
The Krugersdorp Game Reserve, close to Johannesburg and Pretoria (Tshwane) offers enough wildlife species to attract the many visitors who do not have the time for a major safari or who may just want a day out or to camp in the African Bush.
Only 1500 hectares in size and dotted with dams, the reserve is not small on vegetation – primarily grassland, but with forests, shrub thickets and fybos in the valleys, it is home to more than 200 bird species. There is also a large walk-through aviary built into an old quarry, which provides great sightings of a number of South Africa’s birds.
On to the game – as the park controls the numbers, visitors can easily see the giraffe, zebra, antelope, roan, sable, hippo, gemsbok and other species. The lion are kept in their own enclosure, and are fed on Sunday mornings between 10h00 and 11h00. Day and night game drives are also on offer.
Guided horse-riding tours are available for which horse-riding experience is not necessary as experienced guides will help beginners get set in the saddle.
Braai and picnic facilities are available. Ngonyama Lion Lodge, set in the reserve, offers two-bed rondawels, six-bed family chalets and two- and four-bed luxury units. Campsites are also available at the Ngonyama Caravan Park.
As the reserve is so close to Pretoria and Johannesburg it can get busy on the weekends, so plan to get there early. Admission is payable: Open daily from 08h00 to 18h00. Tel: +27 (0)71 556 3813.
From Krugersdorp, travel towards Rustenburg on the R24 (Rustenburg Road) and you will see the reserve on your right.
