Hanover, Upper Karoo, Northern Cape
Hanover is a tiny town in the Upper Karoo with a couple of dozen streets, some pretty architecture and friendly locals – typically sleepy Karoo.
However, Hanover sits at a road juncture between South Africa’s major cities and so it’s a good place to stop for a rest and some ‘koffee en koeksister’ or to visit one of the houses lived in by famous South African author Olive Schreiner at the turn of last century.
The primary appeal of this little Karoo gem is the old 19th century architecture and gentle pace of life. The town (or village to be more accurate) is surrounded by semi-arid Karoo farmland. Don’t drive on too quickly though! A nearby attraction on the road to Colesburg is the Karoo Gariep Conservancy.
Getting there: Hanover sits on the N1 between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
