Sasolburg, Northern Free State, Vaal Triangle
So often dismissed by tourism sites as an industrial town, Sasolburg in fact offers a wealth of activities, and is surprisingly green.
Sasolburg is the home of SASOL – South African Coal, Oil and Gas, and was established in 1954 as a residential township for employees and their families.
Today, it is has been ‘greened’, with more trees than residents, and has a wealthy suburban area at Vaalpark.
Sasolburg is a great destination for anyone looking to enjoy the many watersports activities on offer on the nearby Vaal River and the Vaal Dam.
In addition to the proximity of water activities at the Vaal, Sasolburg is close to southern Gauteng attractions such as the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve and the Emerald Resort and Casino entertainment complex.
Getting there: Take the R59 south from Johannesburg via Alberton, Meyerton and Vereeniging. Sasolburg lies just over the border between Gauteng and the Free State.
