Stylish eats at the 25th Decorex Joburg
TASTY SERVINGS OF STYLISH EATS AT THE 25th DECOREX JOBURG
Designed to excite all the senses, Decorex Joburg – presented by Plascon – has organised a tasteful mix of leading chefs and on-trend eateries set to feature in beautifully-styled settings. Taking place at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 8 to 12 August, this delicious #rhythmoflife exhibition is set to be a real foodie haven.
The Gourmet Cooking Theatre
Some of South Africa’s best chefs will demonstrate some unique meals using the latest kitchen appliances, in a gorgeous kitchen installation curated by Riverwoods, with surfaces by Stonehenge and appliances by Hisense. There will be hour-long demonstrations by a host of culinary masters taking place throughout the show.
Chef Coo Pillay, Executive Chef of Protea Hotel by Marriott OR Tambo and Vice-Chairman of the SA Chefs Gauteng Committee will get things going with easy-to-emulate meals that cater to taste and budget. Chef Coo has partnered with Tiger Brands and Unilever Food Solutions for four inspired demonstrations.
“We will prepare a homemade burger served on a bread bun made from King Korn sorghum powder – all of which is uniquely South African,” said Chef Coo. “I see myself as a very ‘rustic-style’ chef and I love fusing different styles of cooking and flavours onto a plate.”
Fans of the popular cooking contest, My Kitchen Rules SA, are in for a treat as Season 2 contestant, Donald Chipumha, will be putting his culinary skills on display.
“I will discuss the best ways to handle ingredients while demonstrating practical cooking – quick, easy and tasty meals,” said Donald. “I’m a home-cook and I like to be practical and conscious about what I cook. I prefer simple, robust flavours without overcomplicating things. I will be preparing my signature dish – Herb-Crusted Lamb Chops with Charred Sweetcorn Salad.”
Young cooking sensation, social media influencer and author of the blog ‘Cooking with Luyanda’, Luyanda Mafanya will impress audiences with her culinary expertise at her debut Decorex Joburg appearance.
“This is going to be a young, fun, energetic cooking experience that showcases my huge love and passion for food,” said the enthusiastic 24-year-old chef. “I’m really into family-style cooking, big portions, sharing plates… all packed with flavour. Right now, my signature dish is Crispy Roasted Pork Belly.”
Bringing some cool flavour and style to the Gourmet Cooking Theatre will be Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, Managing Director of ShowLove, an event, brand and content management organisation at the forefront of the entertainment industry.
Discussing his upcoming Decorex Joburg demonstration, Tibz said: “I’m a cook who loves to make simple food beautiful. I’m big on preparation but make cooking easy. I enjoy techniques from around the world, especially French techniques, that I pick up from many chef friends.”
This French-style cooking is evident in his signature dish, Tibz’ Lil Lamb, which is lamb rump made with seasoned asparagus. Tibz said he likes to incorporate protein and vegetables into his cooking. “I’m also in events, so presentation and plating are fun for me.”
Displaying the versatility of her ingenious Curry 4 Dummies spice box and recipe booklet will be Natalie Dinath. Using just four bottles of spices, Natalie has created a booklet that outlines 20 extremely varied recipes, three of which she will feature at the Gourmet Cooking Theatre.
These include her famous Butter Chicken dish, exquisite chicken livers, and one other recipe still be announced.
“I like to demonstrate the incredibly diverse tastes and flavours you can get by simply using these four Curry 4 Dummies spices,” she explained. “It’s not just curry-based, there are so many dishes that can be created and I’m excited to share these with the audience.”
Finishing off this enticing set is the renowned chef, Deena Naidoo, the first-ever winner of MasterChef South Africa and owner of restaurant, Aarya, based in Montecasino and Silverstar Casino. As a fan of Decorex for years, he’s excited to be featuring at the Gourmet Cooking Theatre.
“I love imparting my culinary knowledge and, having spent 25 years in the corporate world, I enjoy dynamic people and interactions.”
Describing himself as a ‘good teacher’, Deena has garnered a vast amount of food and cooking experience which he is always excited to share with others.
“I believe South Africa offers the best food produce to the world, something that we often take for granted,” he continued. “I use our local products and enjoy presenting honest, sincere meals. Having grown up in a traditional South African Indian home, I love my spices. I delicately balance flavours so as not to overpower the essence of the gentler ingredients within the dish. I plan to share family meals, presented with restaurant-quality finesse.”
