Van Stadensrus, Motheo, Free State

Van Stadensrus (Vanstadensrus), Free State, South Africa

Van Stadensrus (also called Vanstadensrus – one word) is a tiny settlement barely big enough to be called a hamlet, let alone a town, and by some reports it is dilapidated. However, some of the buildings are really beautiful (even by Free State standards) and they’d make good ruins.

Whatever State it is in at the time of writing, Van Stadensrus is well tucked into the Maloti Mountain foothills, and the surrounding scenery is lush and beautiful.

The settlement is built on the shore of the Egmont Dam, between Wepener and Zastron – a very lovely place to go camping. Nearby attractions include the Caledon Nature Reserve and the Aasvoelberg Hiking Trail at Zastron.

Getting there: Take the R26 south from Wepener.
