Thaba Nchu, Motheo, Central Free State

Thaba Nchu, Free State, South Africa

Thaba Nchu is a small town about 60km from Bloemfontein, with an interesting and unique history rooted in the tribal migrations and wars of the past two centuries, as well as a somewhat unusual tribal/colonial alliance that resulted in Thaba Nchu rising as a wholly enfranchised black town from the 19th century on.  The majority of the population are Tswana, and for the Tswana, Thaba Nchu and the mountain is their ‘spiritual home’.

Another unusual feature of the town is in keeping with tribal traditions. Though the town falls under  the jurisdiction of the Bloemfontein centered Mangaung Municipality, it is still governed by the King Chief Albert Moroka – the latest ruler in a long line of Tswana Chief Morokas, and who also fulfills the role of Chief Judge in Thaba Nchu’s Court of Law.

Thaba Nchu mountain – the ‘Black Mountain’ presides over the town in an otherwise flat landscape. (The mountain is named for its afternoon shadow, not the demographics of Thaba Nchu). The mountain has played a pivotal role in establishment of Thaba Nchu – which is literally translated as Black Mountain.

Attractions in and around Thaba Nchu include the Thaba Nchu Sun, the Maria Moroka Game Reserve and the Protea Hotel Black Mountain.

The area is ideal for outdoors activities such as hiking, horse-riding, mtb and 4×4, and is also a popular stop for travellers heading in to or out of Lesotho on the N8.

Getting there: Take the N8 east from Bloemfontein.
