Ladybrand, Motheo, The Free State
The little town of Ladybrand is situated in the central Free State Motheo region, but is also very close to the Lesotho border, distinguishing it from the more ‘inland’ towns of Motheo, and putting it on the Maluti mountain route.
Situated in the Caledon River Valley, Ladybrand is green and lush in the summer months, with a stunning mountain backdrop, particularly in the winter months when the Maluti mountains are covered in snow.
Ladybrand is an perfect stop-over for anyone interested in human history. The area is rich is San Rock Art (there are over 300 sites), and the Caledon River Valley features a number of pre-historic caves that have yielded evidence of habitation as far back as 50 000 years ago.
Like all towns in the Maluti foothills, Ladybrand has many lovely sandstone buildings, and is a ‘gateway’ to Lesotho. It is therefore a good base for hikers and other outdoors enthusiasts and for anyone wishing to explore the mountains of Lesotho. Horse-riding and trekking is very popular. For the less active, gentle walks and camping in the area are as good a way to enjoy the scenery and the open expanses.
Getting there: Ladybrand lies on the R26 Maloti route from Zastron. From Bloemfontein, take the N8 toward Lesotho’s Capital Maseru. This passes right through Ladybrand at the border.
