Excelsior

Excelsior, Free State, South Africa

Excelsior is a very small farming town in the northern district of the Free State’s Central Motheo Region, at the edge of the Korrannaberg Conservancy area, which Excelsior ‘shares’ with the small towns of Marquard and Clocolan.

Excelsior has always been better known for outdoors attractions and activities offered by the privately owned and stunning Korannaberg Conservancy than for attractions in the tiny town itself, which is full of quaint old buildings but a bit rundown. Sadly this Conservancy is now closed to the public. These outdoors attractions included the Korannaberg Hiking Trail, 4×4 trails, abseiling and horse riding.

Unfortunately, Korrannaberg Adventures which provided these activities and accommodations on the Conservancy is no longer operating, and the Korannaberg Conservancy is closed to the public at the time of writing.

Excelsior has basic amenities and facilities, a couple of quaint guest houses and some sports facilities. There is also a small golf club.

Getting there: From Bloemfontein take the N1 north-east for 60km, then turn right on to the R703 for Excelsior. Total travelling time is about 1 and a half hours.
