Winburg, Goldfields Region, Free State
Most if not all Free State towns display evident Voortrekker and Boer War history with monuments, but the small Central Free State town of Winburg has more of this history on display than many. Winburg has a pivotal place in South Africa’s Voortrekker history, and the second Voortrekker Monument is located in Winburg (the first primary monument is in Pretoria). There is also a large graveyard and memorial at the site of a Boer War Concentration Camp, and several other National Heritage buildings, including the Church.
Note: Sadly, there have been recent reports to the effect that Winburg has become somewhat run down, with access to the Concentration Camp site degraded to the point of impassibility. Hopefully this situation will change.
Attractions near Winburg include the Willem Pretorius Nature Reserve.
Getting there: Winburg is located on the N1 between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, about and hour and a half drive from Bloem, and south of Welkom, Virginia and Theunissen on the R73.
