Welkom

Welkom is the second largest city in the Free State after Bloemfontein, and is a centre for gold mining in South Africa. Situated in the Lejweleputswa region of the Free State (also called the Free State Goldfields), Welkom is mostly a destination for those interested in gold mining, but also Boer history. There are many museums and monuments to both in Welkom.

Welkom is also known for its many parks, including ‘Flamingo Pan’ with it resident population of these striking birds, and for the clever use of traffic circles that has kept the city free of all but a few traffic lights. The city’s layout brings interested parties from all over the world, and is an example of superb town planning. Other features include the world’s deepest wine cellar which is 857 metres below ground at the St Helena Mine, which is still operational today.

Welkom grew quickly from a Free State farm into a thriving and wealthy commercial centre after the discovery of gold on the farm in 1946, and today the city of Welkom has a population to support ballet, theatre, motor racing and gambling – plenty to keep the locals busy and visitors entertained.

For those who love revs and rubber under the hot South African sun, the Phakisa Freeway is a world class motor sports venue with a F1 track as well as a Speedway Oval. The Phakisa Freeway also hosts the South African Moto GP each year.

Getting there: From Bloemfontein take the N1 toward Kroonstad, turning off at Exit 208 onto the R30 toward Brandfort and Welkom. From Johannesburg take the N1 south to Kroonstad. Just after Kroonstad take Exit 393 on to the R34 for Odendaalsrus and Welkom.
