Theunissen, Goldfields Region, Free State
Theunissen is small farming town in the central Free State, in the Goldfields maize farming, mushroom farming and gold mining area. Like most, if not all Free State towns, there is a pretty central church, Victorian houses, a strong presence of Boer War, Voortrekker and Gold Rush history, and legendary Afrikaans hospitality prevails.
Theunissen enjoys rolling grasslands surroundings interspersed with wetland and lush bush surroundings along the banks of the Vet River about 15km from the town.
A recently restored steam locomotive sits at the entrance to the town – a reminder of the Gold Rush days.
The town is surrounded by huge farms and a number of small gold and diamond mines. Other than that, there is a cheese farm, a small golf course and a singular wine cellar, but the nearby Erfenis Dam and Nature Reserve offers good fishing, and is a popular weekend recreational area for locals who go there to camp, fish, braai, enjoy watersports and game viewing.
A little further away, but still easily within an hour’s drive, the Willem Pretorious Nature Reserve is one of the Free State’s bigger reserves and offers resort facilities.
