Qolora Mouth

Qolora Mouth on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape is a place of quiet beauty – a place where you feel you are a part of nature. And what nature – beautiful wide sandy beaches, wild sea, calm lagoon, fishing spots, coastal reserve and rolling green hills dotted with mud huts. The hamlet of Qolora Mouth is situated just a little further north-east of Kei Mouth and south west of Mazeppa Bay. It is easy to access Qolora Mouth without a 4×4, and you will enjoy the ferry crossing, on a pontoon, over the Kei River.

And what can you do in this scenic part of South Africa? You can enjoy the lagoon which is ideal for swimming or canoeing up to 4km upstream; walk trails through the pretty coastal forest reserve – a 4 km walk inland from Qolora Mouth takes you to the historical pool where Nongqawuse, a young medium, was believed to have communicated with ancestral spirits in the 1850s leading to the destruction of the Xhosa cattle herds; stroll to Khobonqaba Point, a popular fishing spot; enjoy wonderful beach walks on the wide stretches of sand on either side of the Qolora Mouth; view the Jacaranda, a wrecked coaster, firmly lodged between the rocks since 1971; photograph the gorge through which the Qolora River forges its way to the ocean; visit Mazeppa Bay only 6 kilometres away, or just enjoy the solitude and do nothing at all.
