East London is a large port city with an interesting history, but one of its most appealing features is the long stretches of beach, warm waters and warm weather through most of the year.

East London is a favourite destination for surfers and holiday-makers alike, and features the associated ‘laid-back’ character, and is also called Buffalo City due to its location on the mouth of the Buffalo River.

Besides surfing and sun-tanning on the beautiful beaches, there are many things to do in East London, from adventure activities to family and cultural attractions.

East London is known for its diverse and plentiful fishing opportunities, and you certainly have your pick of venues. There are plenty of beaches that offer rock and surf angling, and river angling from boats or off the banks of the many rivers that empty into the sea, some of which are the Nahoon, Bonza Bay and Gonubie. Deep sea fishing is also a good choice and charters are available from the Ski Boat Club. Take a day trip for fly fishing for trout at Maden Dam in King Williams Town, bass fishing at Wriggleswade Dam near Stutterheim, trout fishing at Gubu Dam, also near Stutterheim and closer, bass fishing at Bridal Drift Dam.

The East London Yacht Club has everything you need as a yachtsman. The most popular dive site in East London is Three Sisters.

East London has some unexpected treasures in the local nature reserves. Hiking, walks, wildlife and excellent birdwatching are the main attractions in these reserves which include the Umtiza Forest Reserve, for birding and hiking, the Amalinda Nature Reserve, Nahoon Point Nature Reserve and the Gonubie Nature Reserve. Wildlife can also be viewed at Inkwenkwezi, a world-class private game reserve.

East London certainly has options for the golfer to enjoy. Most of the golf courses offer sea views and are reasonably priced for a round of golf.

Attractions in East London include the The East London Museum, the East London Aquarium, the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, the Lion Park, Gately House, Hemingways Casino, Lock Street Gaol shopping complex, Queen’s Park Zoo and the Botanical Gardens.

If it is shopping you want, then see all the local shopping centres where you can shop till you drop.

Getting there: East London is situated on the N2. From Grahamstown take the N2 via King Williams Town. From Port Elizabeth you can take the N2 via Grahamstown, or head for the R72 coastal road which will also bring you out at East London. The latter route is longer, but very pretty with lots of delightful coastal areas, towns and villages along the way.
