Rhodes

Rhodes has it all for someone who appreciates being in nature, away from the madding crowds. And what nature – the beautiful mountain scenery, over 200kms of prime fly fishing rivers and eco sports heaven. Just 16kms south of Lesotho, Rhodes is in the heart of the Eastern Cape Highlands and a good base for participating in all that is on offer in the area.

In the 1880’s, Rhodes settlers built Victorian cottages which give the village a unique character and in 1997 the entire village was proclaimed as a Conservation Area.

First and foremost, Rhodes is recognised worldwide as a top fly fishing destination. Within one
hour of the village, there are 200 kilometres of superb river fishing in the Bell, Kraai and Bosbokspruit rivers. Catch and release is the predominant policy, but some venues allow a couple of fish a person a day. Permits and beats can be booked with the Wild Trout Association at Walkerbouts Inn. The Rhodes Extreme Mountain Bike Stage Race is a three-day event that is ranked as one of the best mountain bike rides in South Africa. It takes place on the 24 September, Heritage Day Weekend and is described in Tim Brink’s article ‘The Entry List’ as one of 11 rides to do before you die, published in November 2009 Bicycling Magazine. The biggest event of the year in Rhodes is the 52-kilometre Rhodes Trail Run. It’s held in July, so there’s almost always snow. The field is limited to 300 and there’s a seven-year waiting list, so you’re lucky if you manage to get a place. Despite the extreme conditions and altitudes (the race goes right up to the Lesotho border close to the base of Ben Macdhui), around 90 per cent of entrants finish and qualify for a festive complimentary bottle of sherry. If you love scenic drives, the area has great passes, most of which can be driven in a high clearance vehicle. You can also attack the passes on two wheels, both pedal and motor.
