Barkly East

Although the snow is fun for visitors and locals, it is not always the friend of the farmers. Barkly East is well known for its sheep farming and for producing some of the best wool and most tender lamb in South Africa.

The town is surrounded by a number of great passes, which besides stunning scenery, off the 4×4 enthusiast and mountain bikers plenty of action. The passes are also ideal for photographers and birdwatchers. The wildflowers in the area are not only beautiful, but attract the nectar and insect loving birds. Fly fishing also attracts visitors to this premier destination and recently, the opening of the winter fly fishing season on Wild Trout Association waters around Barkly East, Lady Grey, Rhodes and Wartrail has given a new dimension to the sport.

This area has hundreds of kilometres of unspoiled natural rivers, from small streams in the headwaters that are fished with light tackle to larger streams and deep pools. The specimens include wild trout, brown trout and yellowfish. The rivers do not need to be stocked as the natural proliferation is sufficient to support the sport. And best of all, you get your own private spot.

Kopshorn Peak Hiking Trail is one of the highest around Barkly East. The four hour trail which offers exceptional mountain views has some steep ascents and a challenging vertical rock climb. The hike is strenuous and is not recommended for the elderly or unfit. Be prepared for sudden weather changes – take along a snack, sufficient fluid, sunblock and warm gear. Should mist roll over the mountains, please descend immediately to avoid getting lost or going over precipitous cliffs edges. The trail is accessible from Prospect Self Catering Cottage – Directions: Leave Barkly past the Police Station and drive 15 km on the Elliot Road, when you will see a yellow round flower box at entrance to main house- turn sharp left .

The area teems with rock art and tours can be arranged with knowledgeable tour guides. Visits to all sites must be accompanied.
