Somerset East

Somerset East in the Eastern Cape is typical of a town settled in the early days of South African history. The beauty, excellent grazing, wildlife and ample water in this malaria free area were too much to resist.

Situated on a scenic drive, 180km from Port Elizabeth, en-route to Graaff-Reinet, picturesque Somerset East is a convenient place to stop over. The countryside around the town is quite varied with impressive mountains, rich farmland, forest and open Karoo veld, all within a short drive of the town.

History

For those who are interested in early South African history, Somerset East has plenty of homes still standing from the early 1800’s and is a microcosm of life at that time. Military, Afrikaner and settler influence add to the spirit of the town. A walk down Paulet and other streets will take you back in time.

Amongst the many noteworthy buildings in the town are the Old Wesleyan Chapel, which now houses the Somerset East Museum and unique because it forms part of the Boschberg Nature Reserve. Around Somerset East

The Boschberg Nature Reserve – The mountain overlooking Somerset East forms the backdrop to the beautiful Boschberg Nature Reserve. This 2000 plus hectare reserve is thickly wooded in the upper region, which boast 16 waterfalls, Outeniqua yellowwoods, white stinkwoods, cabbage trees, wild peaches, and olives, while the lower slopes offer sheltered kloofs and grassy plains.

This is a popular destination amongst the hiking fraternity, and offers an intensive 15 km, circular, overnight hike. Other less strenuous hikes through the reserve include The Bestershoek Trail. A wide variety of wildlife can be seen including zebra, bushbuck, tortoises, bush pig, frogs, lizards and snakes. Birdwatching in the reserve offers eighty three species, which include the Knysna loerie, and in summer months increased sightings of blackcap, Cape eagle owl, and buff streaked chat.

Trout fishing on five local dams, as well as Rainbow and Brown trout fishing in the Glen Avon Waterfall pools is very popular.

The Bankberg Troutfishers Club manages the trout fishing waters in the area. The waters consist of both still water and river fishing. Somerset East is a gem for fly fishing for trout and other freshwater species. Trophy trout abound in the Buffelshoek dam, with sightings of 7 pound trout in the Little Fish River pools. The waters are private and exclusive, and access is strictly monitored, in order to ensure that you experience the magic of the Karoo whilst fly fishing. The Glen Avon Heights waterfall, the scale of which is only appreciated from close up, has the reputation of being one of the highest drops of water on private land. Entrance to the falls must be organised by contacting Reg and Vivian Claydon at Avon Heights, 17km from town off the Cookhouse road, as access to the foot of the falls is through their farm. The Glen Avon Farm  offers fly fishing, birding, hiking, biking and a chance to enjoy life on a working sheep farm. The Mill can be viewed by prior arrangement on Glen Avon Farm.
