Katberg, Amatola Region, Eastern Cape

Katberg, Amatola Region, Eastern CapeKatberg in the Amatola Region of the Eastern Cape is a popular holiday spot in beautiful surroundings, only 2 hours from East London. Away from the mad rush, the citrus orchards and meadows, rivers and forested ravines are a great setting for Katberg hiking, which is a choice activity.

The Katberg forest offers several day walks lasting from one to four hours around the forest station and the Katberg Hotel. There is also a 2 day trail and the 3 day 40km Katberg Hiking Trail. Both leave from the Katberg Protea Hotel and Mountain Spa.

For the golfer, there is the Katberg Eco Golf Estate. The 6300m par 72 course, with 4 par 3′s and 4 par 5′s, presents challenging but balanced golf. The beauty of the course culminates at a waterfall between the 17th and 18th holes.

The nearby Thrift Dam is a must for fishing fanatics. The most easterly and largest of the trout fisheries in the area, it lies on the uppermost reaches of the Black-Kei River and is stocked with rainbow trout that average two kilograms a piece.

Katberg is only 30km from Hogsback, a very interesting village, and worth a day trip.

The Katberg pass, almost unfeasible in an ordinary car as the condition of the road is now really poor offers scenery to take your breath away at the summit.
