Barbel (Clarias Gariepinus)

Barbel (Clarias Gariepinus)

Barbel
  • Also known as:  Barbel, Skerptand  Barber.
  • Scientific Name:  Clarias Gariepinus.
  • Description:  They have been seen in the following colours shades of olive green, brown and even almost completely black. These fish are commonly large, heavy boned, flat headed species with pointed teeth and long barbs on their head.
  • Average weight:  8 KG and can weigh up to 60 kilograms.
  • Length:  Can to grow up to 2 metres.
  • Habitat:  Commonly found in a lot of rivers, dams, lakes and other bodies of water in the country.

Carp
  • Also known as: Karp
  • Scientific Name: Cyprinus carpio.
  • Description: From olive brown to rich gold and cream above and pale yellow below. The fins are grey and even sometimes tinted a pinkish-red.  They appear off-white in very muddy waters. They have serrated spines in dorsal and anal fins.  
  • Weight: Found in various weights
  • Length: Found in various lengths.
  • Habitat: They prefer large water bodies with slow moving or stagnant water.

Largemouth Bass

  • Also Known as: Grootbek
  • Scientific Name: Micropterus Salmoides
  • Description: They been seen in the following colours: olive green fish, colour get darker green to olive green towards the back, marked by a series of dark, sometimes black, blotches forming a jagged horizontal stripe along each flank.
  • Weight: Average weight is around 2 kilograms.
  • Length: Average length is around 60 centimetres.
  • Habitat: They look for structures in water like old dead trees or overhanging trees near the water. They can also be found in other structures or plants inside the water like reeds and floating debris.

Mudfish

  • Also Known as: Oranje Rivier moddervis
  • Scientific Name: Labeo Capensis
  • Description: Silvery grey to dark fish with small scales.
  • Weight: Average weight is around 4 kilograms.
  • Length: Average is around 50 centimetres.
  • Habitat: They prefer large slow moving or still bodies of water.

Yellowfish
  • Also known as:  Grootskubgeelvis
  • Scientific Name:  Labeobarbus Marequensis
  • Description:  Light olive green to dark golden yellow.
  • Weight:  Average is around 6 kilograms
  • Length:  Average is around 50cm.
  • Habitat:  They prefer streams or at the top of waterholes in rivers. If there is an island inside the river it is best to look for these fish at the bottom side of the direction of the stream.
