Sod turning marks official beginning of Merino Mall’s construction in Ermelo
Architects and designers took to Ermelo for inspiration with the design of the mall and decided on elements like stone and wood to keep the design simple.
A sod-turning, also known as a groundbreaking ceremony, marked the official beginning of the Merino Mall’s construction on July 27.
Mr Pieter Beyers, from the Moolman Developers Group, opened the ceremony and welcomed all guests.
He added that planning for the project began about eight years ago.
The site where the mall will be built is about 11 hectares, covering approximately 28 000m².
Architects and designers took to Ermelo for inspiration with the design of the mall and decided on elements like stone and wood to keep the design simple.

The development will also have a positive influence on local economic development, as developers have affirmed the use of the local workforce throughout the construction phases of the mall.
Mr Beyers said the mall will also provide about 500 employment opportunities, once the mall opens.
The three anchor tenants for the mall are Checkers, Pick n Pay and Woolworths, with numerous national retailers to be part of this centre.
