Sasol awards 2014 top matric achievers
SECUNDA – Sasol hosted its 20th annual Grade 12 Merit Award ceremony on 16 January to recognize and reward pupils from the Govan Mbeki Municipality in Mpumalanga who have passed their final year in matric examinations with three or more distinctions in 2014.
A total of 64 pupils were awarded Sasol Grade 12 Merit Award certificates and also received cash prizes for their outstanding results. 23 pupils were awarded for obtaining three distinctions, 14 were awarded for four distinctions, 10 pupils were awarded for five distinctions, 7 were awarded for six distinctions, nine pupils were awarded for seven distinctions and one learner was awarded for obtaining nine distinctions.
For the first time, Sasol also recognised 15 learners from Quintile one to three graded non fees schools, and Sasol sponsored educational programmes for the best achievement in mathematics and physical science learning area. Each learner received R15 000 to be used towards their registration fee at a tertiary institution of their choice.
Maureen Mboshane, Vice President: Public and Regulatory Affairs, Secunda Chemicals Operations said: “Sasol has awarded nearly 1468 bursaries to aspiring students in Secunda over the past 10 years. This initiative, including many other ones Sasol supports, shows Sasol’s commitment to continuing to support the Department of Education, teachers and learners in their efforts to produce future leaders of this country”.
Mboshane also encouraged those who are doing their Grade 12 this year to do their best, utilise the resources at their disposal such as the facilities that Sasol has made available through the Osizweni Education Development Centre, and commit themselves fully. The centre is for the advancement of quality education particularly mathematics and science.
The Sasol annual Grade 12 Merit Award ceremony is initiative in support of the objectives of Government’s National Development Plan (NDP) which aims to uplift communities.
Sasol Secunda will also be hosting, for the first time, Sasol TechnoX, this initiative should be utilised fully to explore the wonder of science. Learners in Mpumalanga will have an opportunity to experience and experiment anything on science.
