First arrest in Marongo-murder
VOLKSRUST – Eight months have passed since November 2014 when the body of the late Advocate Yandisa Marongo (47) was found next to the Leandra Road, between Standerton and Leandra, with a gunshot to the head.
The death of the former head of legal services at Lekwa Municipality sent shockwaves through the community of Standerton. Mr Marongo was placed on suspension, facing a disciplinary hearing from Lekwa Local Municipality before he was murdered. His death has left an element of suspicion due to the fact that he did not pitch for his scheduled hearing which was to be held at the municipality just a week before his death. The investigating officer, Detective Constable Duma Mkhwanazi of Charl Cilliers Police, reported that Mr Marongo’s vehicle, a blue Audi A4 and cellphone were missing from the scene.
A Police source reported that a special police task team arrested a 27-year-old man driving the deceased’s car in Volksrust on Friday, 19 June 2015. It is alleged that Mr Marongo’s blue Audi has been monitored by Police in the streets of Volksrust for a long time. The vehicle is said to have been confiscated by Police and kept in a safe place while investigation is continuing. Although police have confirmed the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of the suspect, they could not divulge more information due to the sensitivity of the case.
However Cosmos News is in possession of the name of the suspect. A source says that the suspect, who is reported to originate from Volksrust, is well known in Standerton. It has been confirmed that he appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June. He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and remanded into custody while the investigation continues. He is being detained at an undisclosed location awaiting his second court appearance on the 8th of July. Unconfirmed reports say that Police are not ruling out more arrests in the case. DM
