Local election results in Govan Mbeki municipality: 2016

The results for the local government elections in 2016 for the Govan Mbeki municipality, where Secunda is situated, is as follows:

ANC SEATS:    36     PERCENTAGE:    56,95%     VOTES:     86,639

DA SEATS:       15         PERCENTAGE:    23,94%       VOTES:    36,414

EFF SEATS:      9          PERCENTAGE:    13,24%       VOTES:    20,141

What is interesting is that the Govan Mbeki municipality has the second poorest show for ANC votes in the province. Only in the Steve Tswete municipality does the ANC have a marginally poorer percentage of 55,78%.

The DA’s growth in these two municipalities has been phenomenal. Although the ANC had no problem in painting the province green, it is clear that the laagering around the President has cost them dearly. Likewise, the EFF has made decisive inroads in the political landscape.
