VOLUNTEER YOUR SERVICES FOR FREE TO START A BUSINESS
A lady (using only her first name Shantha) from a dirt-poor background in India volunteered her services for free (except bus fair) to gain exposure and experience in the business world. She started at a government office and learned to network, work with computers and basic business principles. Through them she heard of a self-help group for women and she joined; this in itself is remarkable as women are still seen as a lower caste or status group in India – a world dominated by men.
The scheme involved 20 women who could raise 10 rupees each (the equivalent of R2.30!) and the bank would meet the same amount in a loan. This proved to be harder than it sounds as most women had to save vigorously to get that. It took her six months or persuasion and cajoling to accomplish that. Finally, they could get an amount together to be matched by the bank and when she heard of a group that was out-sourcing the making of bags, she used the micro-lending model to get work for more ladies in her village.
They finally rented a space and today she tries to encourage more women to join the group. She is now one of the few people who own a concrete house, fan, bed, stove and other previously unheard of luxuries. her model is now used in other villages too.
What is the implication for South African people? In a country with chronic shortages of staff in key areas such as hospitals, schools, police department and the like, it seems like a heaven-sent opportunity. School leavers can try to get themselves accepted in these (or even the corporate world). They must make sure their contributions are above reproach and soon appreciated because of excellence. Not only do they gain experience (which many claim they lack as there is no employment), but also teaches valuable skills and expose them to valuable contacts.
An added benefit is that the unemployed may feel they make meaningful contributions with all the concurrent positive effects and it staves off boredom and a feeling of dejection.
Hopefully this idea will benefit some, as people are far more accepting when they don’t have to pay for your services.
