The Buffelspoort Route
Buffelspoort and surrounds, our “valley”, is a beautiful, unique and rather unspoilt part of the Magaliesberg Biosphere. We are indeed very proud to form part of the Biosphere. It is rich in history and biodiversity and form an integral part of the area’s natural and cultural heritage. The area’s assets and close proximity to Gauteng, make it very attractive from a tourism-, recreation and residential point of view.
To market our area as a tourist destination, an Information office and a Tourism Association was established in 2011, to guide the traveler to a variety of destinations.
Our boundaries stretch from Groenkloof, bordering on our neighboring Hartbeespoort in the East to Kroondal, bordering on Rustenburg in the West, and from Marikana in the North to Maanhaarrand in the South. It includes the two pristine dams, the Buffelspoort and Olifantsnek dams.
The following activities are available in our area:
- The hospitality industry, including guest lodges, holiday resorts, restaurants and pubs.
- Adventure tourism, like canopy tours, abseiling, mountaineering and walking trails, kloofing, paragliding, hiking, boating.
- Sport like running, swimming, triathlon, biking, fishing, archery, microlite flying, golf, horse riding.
- Agriculture, like citrus, flowers, soft fruit, berries, tobacco, sunflowers, herbs, game, duck, poultry, life stock, game ranching etc.
- Historical interesting places, like the battlefields and block houses form the “Boer War”, old Matabele kraals, the German historical town of Kroondal, Tswana settlements, early Voortrekker settlements.
- Mining: Some of the richest Platinum and Chrome deposits in the country.
- Nature – and botanical tourism, like birding, tree-spotting, conservancies, game rehabilitation.
- Religion – it is the birthplace of the Dutch Reformed Church, aBuddism, Sionism, Lutherism, etc.
- Festivals, like the huge yearly Citrus Festival, with the Monster M.B. race, Classical music festival, Sunflower festival.
- Arts, Culture Music. The Tarentaal Theatre and restaurant bring all the well-known artists into the valley, in a lovely rustic setting.
- Education: A Montessouri school, the Deutsche Schule and numerous pre-primary, primary and intermediary schools.
- Retirement villages at Kroondal and new one in the making at the old Wigwam Hotel.
- Secure Housing developments.
- Numerous conference facilities.
Our mission is to ensure quality service to visitors to our valley, to assist and showcase business- and product owners within our sector and to provide a network platform for our members.
